Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) involves the use of specialized tools and techniques to help resolve pain, tightness, and movement dysfunction in the body. The technique triggers an inflammatory healing response by detecting and treating myofascial dysfunction.

Medical professionals have developed IASTM treatments through years of research and the effectiveness continues to be validated by the research. At Athens Physical Therapy, we have a number of therapists who have obtained continuing education along with hands-on training to be able to practice IASTM techniques.

Common Conditions Treated with IASTM:

  • Cervical/Lumbar Strain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Lateral/Medial Epicondylitis (elbow pain)
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis (shoulder pain)
  • Patellofemoral Disorders (knee pain)
  • Scar Tissue
  • Trigger points
  • Shin Splints
  • And more

Cupping

At Athens Physical Therapy we also have a number of therapists who have been trained in the treatment technique of cupping.  Cupping uses negative pressure forces on suction cups to create a lifting of the tissue of the body. The lifting of tissue creates space within to improve mobility and circulation to improve movement patterns, reduce pain, and promote healing.

Our many layers of tissue (skin, muscle, fascia) should move fluidly with one another but many times due to injury, inflammation, immobilization, or just simply over time the tissue can become thickened and less mobile. The use of cupping decompresses this tissue to counteract this event and help restore your mobility.

Common Conditions Treated with Cupping:

  • Orthopedic Conditions
  • Scar Adhesions
  • Post Surgical Recovery
  • Muscle & Movement imbalances
  • Tendonitis
  • Pain
  • Trigger Points
  • And many other conditions

As with any medical intervention there are often precautions or contraindications for the use of IASTM and cupping. Your therapist will determine if these techniques are right for you.
